Biography

Stephen discovered his passion for knives at age 12, learning basic carving techniques that ignited a lifelong fascination. Under the guidance of his father, a self-taught cabinetmaker, he deepened his expertise in knife selection, sharpening, and woodworking. Simultaneously, Stephen pursued classical music, mastering the violin through high school and earning acceptance to Juilliard.

After six months at Juilliard, he shifted focus to a violin-maker’s apprenticeship with Hans Nebel at Rembert Wurlitzer, the premier shop for stringed instrument repair. There, he refined his hand-tool skills, crafting and sharpening blades for a year until the firm closed.

Stephen then studied computer technology, launching a successful career in tech while nurturing his knife passion on the side. Over the past five years, he’s worked part-time sharpening and refurbishing knives. In June 2025, he founded S. Kern Knives to offer comprehensive knife services rooted in craftsmanship and precision.
